Brake callipers

Bike brake callipers are the part of a bicycle's braking system that presses against the wheel's rim to slow down or stop the bike. Calliper brakes use a pair of brake arms, each with a pad attached to it connected by a mechanism that allows them to move towards the rim when the brake lever is pulled. When the brake lever is released, springs in the calliper arms return the brake pads to their original position away from the rim.

Are all brake callipers the same?

Brake callipers vary depending on the bicycle type and the riding disciplines. Road bikes typically use side-pull or centre-pull calliper brakes, while mountain bikes often use disc or cantilever brakes. Each brake type will have variations in design, materials and quality.

Rim brakes callipers

Rim brakes are the most common type of bike brakes. They are mounted on the frame or fork of the bike. They use a rubber brake pad that presses against the wheel's rim to slow down or stop the bicycle.

These brakes are mounted on the wheel hub and use a metal rotor that spins with the wheel. When the brake lever is pulled, the calliper clamps down on the rotor to slow down or stop the bike.
