Kids Helmets
When it comes to children’s safety, especially during outdoor activities like cycling, skating, or using ride-on toys, it is crucial that they wear a helmet. Helmets play an important role in safeguarding children. They don’t just prevent scrapes and bruises, they are a shield for the brain, face and head during unexpected falls and accidents.
Here at Eurocycles, safety is our main priority. No matter how long a bike journey will be, we will always recommend wearing a helmet. Choosing a helmet for your child can be tough as there are a few things to check and consider, ensuring you choose the correct age and size appropriate one, as well as Eurocycles having a wide range of helmets too.
Kids Helmet Size Guide
The first step needed to be taken before you begin to shop for your children’s helmet is to know the size of their head. You must have an accurate measurement in order to get the perfect fit.
What Tools To Use To Measure & How
- Fabric Tape: Make sure the tape is sitting around an inch above their eyebrows, it should not be too tight it should be level around their head.
- Piece Of String: Keep your thumb on the place where the string overlaps, place it against a ruler or measuring tape to get the correct cm or inches. Again, making sure it is level the whole way round.
Choosing your childs Helmet
Now that you have the measurements, pop into either one of our Dublin stores and try on all the helmets we have to offer. As well as testing the helmets the lads can always recommend and point you in the right direction of the helmet that suits your child best. We stock a wide range of helmets from the biggest known brands in the cycling world. A few of our favourite children’s helmets are as follows:
Raleigh kids helmets:
Our favourite Raleigh kids’ helmet is the Mystery Spider Junior Helmet. This helmet is partially popular across our stores, as one of its main features is infusion in-mould construction. This means, that the helmet can be tightened to mould the shape of little ones head to help ensure it is snug and securely positioned.
If you have more of a girly girl rider on your hands, we also stock the Raleigh Quest Helmet which is pink! It is suitable for any adventure. With 21 airflow vents they will be sure to be kept cool while they are exploring as well as having a quick release fitting.
Abus kids helmets
The Abus Scraper 3.0 helmet is one of the more hard-shell helmets we stock. It is suitable for every occasion whether they be out in the skate park or enjoying bike rides on all different types of terrain. As safety is a top priority, the Abus Scraper has high visibility due to its powerful reflectors. It even goes the extra step with being ponytail compatible means no hairstyles get ruined and there are excuses to not wearing a helmet.
Lazer NutZ KinetiCore Helmet
The Lazer NutZ helmets are protective, comfortable and eye catching as they are bright and vibrant coloured, some of which have designs on them too like space themed or unicorns. They are the most kid friendly fit helmet we stock here at Eurocycles thanks to its automatic fitting system which provides a secure fit. Again, all helmet brands aim to have the highest level of safety, the Lazer NutZ has an extra level of protection across the skulls most sensitive are (the temples).
Position The Helmet Just Right
When your child chooses their favourite colour and designed helmet it is vital that the positioning of the helmet is correct.
- Remove any high ponytails or hair accessories that may be in the way of allowing the helmet is fit snuggly.
- Their helmet should sit about two finger width above their eyebrows as well as the back of the helmet not being able to touch the top of the rider’s neck.
- Make sure you can see their eyes, and that they can see clearly on front of them and side-to-side with nothing obstructing their vision.
- The straps on the side of the helmet should make a “V” shape which should be positioned comfortably under their ears.
- Both side straps and chin straps (tight enough that you can fit just one finger between the chin and strap) should not be loose but shouldn’t be too tight that is causes discomfort or digs into their skin.
- Once the helmet is placed and all checks have been completed make sure the helmet is tightened to fit snug. To double check that is it snug, get your little one to shake their head back and forth. If it moves too much, it is too loose and it is time to tighten it.
When To Replace A Bike Helmet
If a bike helmet has been involved in an accident or has been damaged, you must replace it. As the helmets main purpose is to protect the riders head, you must ensure it is in perfect condition. Some damage may not be visible when you look at the helmet but you wont be able to see hairline cracks or damage done to the foam. If the helmet has been in an accident, the foam within the helmet would have been crushed and will not be able to protect the rider again.
