Road bikes are perfect for commuting, leisure cycling or racing. Designed with speed, endurance and comfort in mind, road bicycles have narrow tyres, fewer wheel spokes and light aerodynamic frame allowing for reactive handling and increased maneuverability. Find the best road bikes from leading manufacturers like Scott, Merida, Raleigh and more in our road bikes range.
Road bikes frames are either made of aluminum, steel or carbon or a mix of any two of them:
Steel frames: Strong and flexible, they offer great comfort and easy handling. They are ideal for any beginner road cyclist.
Aluminum frames: Lighter than the steel frames, they are stiffer and you can achieve better average speed with them. Ideal for any intermediate road cyclists.
Carbon frames: Light, stiff yet flexible, carbon frames are ideal for the road racer and any advanced endurance road cyclists.
There is two main types of road bikes, the racing orientated bikes and the endurance ones.
Racing road bikes
Racing bikes maximize performance thanks to their aerodynamic design. Their stiffer frame and lower front end minimize the air resistance while the short wheelbase and steep angles make for better handling and very responsive bikes. The Scott Foil is a great example of a road racing bike. It is design with speed and aerodynamism in mind and is ideal for general road racing.
Endurance road bikes
However, if you are looking to go the distance and eat up the miles, endurance road bikes are the ones you should look at. They offer a more upright position and are more flexible which will give you a more comfortable position. Their longer wheelbase ensures an increase stability. A perfect example of an endurance road bike is the Scott Speedster. With endurance geometry which matches the Scott Addict, the Speedster is a comfortable – but efficient – aluminum road bike with an entry level price tag.
As technology progresses, leading brands like Scott and Bergamont have introduced high performance electric road bikes to their range. If you are looking for a less strenuous alternative to traditional road cycling, then we recommend you check our selection of road e-bikes here.
