Women's Bikes
Women and cycling: a short history.
While women's cycling started in the 1860s in the tandem or tricycle form, soon, the cycling industry developed cycling-specific bikes with drop frames accomodating women's clothes. That, in turn, opened new avenues to women who were able to socialise outside their home settings. This newfound freedom was used by feminists like Annie Londonderry, who accomplished her around-the-globe bicycle trip as the first woman in 1895.
Nowadays, cycling is widely open to women. At Eurocycles, you can purchase women's mountain bikes, women's hybrid bikes, women's road bikes and a wide selection of women's electric bikes.
Why are ladies' bikes a different shape?
Historically, female bikes appeared out of commodity and had a low-step frame to allow for riding with dresses and skirts. Women's bikes were designed smaller, lighter and daintier than the men's sporty models.
Today, thankfully, the differences with a man's bike are a little more than a gender role defined aspect.
Here is a quick guide to understanding why ladies' bikes are different to men's.
Frame size
This is where the main differences between a man's and a woman's bike lie. Men tend to be taller and have a longer arm reach than women. This results in the creation of women's specific frames, which have, in general:
- A shorter stack height (vertical distance between the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube)
- A shorter reach. Women have a shorter torso, meaning ladies' bike frames have a reduced horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube.
- Narrower handlebars. Again, women's shoulders are not as broad as men resulting in narrower handlebars to increase comfort and manoeuvrability.
As previously stated, women's bikes historically were designed with a step-through frame to accommodate clothing. But, women's bikes now also come in more aggressive designs, and crossbar frames are not exclusively reserved for men. Open-frame bikes are also now widely used by both genders as it is a perfect leisure and commuting type of frame.
Saddle
Selected ladies' bikes will also come with women's bicycle saddles. These saddles are to adapt to the wider women's pelvic bones. Although if you are an avid performance cyclist, you might prefer narrower saddles to prevent frictions.
Style
Finally, this is where women's bikes differ the most from men's bikes. Cycling brands like Raleigh, Scott and Bergamont offer brighter, more feminine colours in their ladies' range than in the men's ones. Women's bicycles with baskets are also a popular additional feature that men's bikes do not get.
Which is the best women's bike?
This is not a question that comes with one unique answer. The perfect bike will depend on the type of cycling you do and what you are expecting to get from your bike.
For example, if you are cycling to work every day or cycling your bike to the shop, you should browse our selection of women's hybrid bikes. The ladies' bikes from Raleigh offer classic and trendy bikes to suit this purpose. And if you are looking to make it a little easier on yourself, then why not look at a ladies' electric bike?
On the other hand, if you are looking to shred the hills every weekend, then a women's mountain bike will be your best adventure ally. If downhill thrills aren't your thing, but you prefer going on the roads for hours on end, we offer a wide range of performance women's road bikes from brands like Scott and Bergamont.
What sizes are ladies' bikes?
Every person's anatomy is different, but in general, feel free to consult our Women's Bike Size Guide to get an idea of the bike size you need.
Can ladies ride men's bikes?
While most women will find ladies specific bikes more comfortable, there is no reason why you can't use a unisex/men's bike. Because we are all shaped differently, you might find the perfect fit within the unisex bikes instead of a ladies' bike range. Vice versa, men can choose from women's bikes too, if it happens to be more comfortable. The best way to know how a bicycle feels is to come and try it in-store, where one of our team members will be happy to help you choose the right fit.
Can pregnant ladies ride bikes?
This is a question we are asked regularly in our stores, and we thought we'd give you a quick answer here.
Bike riding is a safe, low-impact option that can be enjoyed throughout pregnancy. However, you might need to scale it back. We will always advise you to listen to your body and follow your general practitioner's advice.
