Bicycle Handlebars
Bike handlebars are a key component of a bicycle's cockpit and are used to control the direction and balance of the bike. At Eurocycles, we stock all the cockpit parts from quality brands like Syncros, Sram, XLC, Raleigh and more.
Types of handlebars
There are many different handlebars types available for bicycles, each with its own unique features and benefits. Here are some of the most common types of handlebars:
Drop bars
These handlebars are typically found on road bikes and provide a range of hand positions for aerodynamics and speed. Their curved shape allows the rider to lean forward and reduce wind resistance.
Flat bars
These handlebars are common on mountain bikes and hybrid bicycles, providing a comfortable, upright riding position. They are straight across and offer a wide range of hand positions for control and stability.
Riser bars
These handlebars are similar to flat bars but have a slight rise in the centre for a more upright position. They are often found on mountain bikes and provide more control and visibility on technical terrain.
Aero bars
These handlebars are designed for triathlon and time trial bikes, allowing the rider to tuck into an aerodynamic position for speed and efficiency. They attach to the top of the drop bars and extend forward for a streamlined position.
Bullhorns
These handlebars have a straight, forward-facing shape that allows the rider to lean forward and get low for speed. They are often used on fixie bikes and track bikes.
Cruiser bars
These handlebars are wide and swept back, offering a relaxed, comfortable riding position. They are often found on beach cruisers and city bikes.
There are also many other handlebars types, including mustache bars, butterfly bars, and more, each with its own unique features and benefits. The choice of handlebars depends on the bike, the riding style, and the rider's preference.
Also associated with handlebars are the following components:
Stem
Bike stems are the part that connects the handlebars to the fork steerer tube, allowing the rider to adjust the height and reach of the handlebars.
Headset
The headset is a set of bearings and races that allow the fork steerer tube to rotate smoothly within the head tube of the bike frame while also holding it securely in place to handle the forces of riding. The headset needs to strike a balance between stiffness and rotation, allowing for precise steering while also absorbing shock and vibration from the road or trail. A poorly adjusted or worn headset can cause problems with handling and stability, so it's vital to maintain it properly and replace it if necessary.
In addition to these parts, handlebars are made more comfortable with the following:
Bar tape
Bartape is a padded, textured material wrapped around the handlebars to provide a comfortable and secure grip. It also helps to absorb shock and reduce fatigue.
Handlebar grips
These are the grips or sleeves that are placed over the ends of the handlebars to provide a comfortable and secure grip. They can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials.
Bar ends
These are extensions that can be attached to the ends of the handlebars, providing an additional hand position for the rider.
Computer mounts
This small accessory can be attached to the handlebars to hold a cycling computer, GPS device, or smartphone for navigation and data tracking.
