Essential bike tools
To keep your bike in top condition, you should invest in the following essentials:
Multi-tools
These portable bike tool kits come with various wrenches, screwdrivers, Allen keys and a chain breaker for on-the-go repairs. A bike multi-tool is a compact and versatile tool that combines several essential functions into one convenient package, making it ideal for on-the-go repairs and adjustments.
Our favourite portable bike tool kit has to be the Syncros Composite 14ct Bike Multi-Tool.
Tyre levers
Tyre levers are a must-have in your tool kit. They come handy when trying to remove/replace a tyre. You should always carry a set with you on rides in case of a puncture.
Patch kit
Repair patches allow to fix punctured tubes quickly. We would however recommend you always carry a spare inner tube as some punctures may be too large or in an awkward position to repair with a patch alone. Additionally, make sure to replace patched tubes as soon as possible, as they may not be as reliable as a new tube.
Hex-wrench/Allen Keys
Necessary for adjusting brakes, derailleurs, and many other components. Get a set with sizes ranging from 2mm to 8mm.
Screwdrivers
Both flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers for various adjustments and repairs.
Chain tool or chain breaker
For removing and reinstalling chain pins, as well as breaking chains. Using a chain tool requires some practice and patience, but once you're familiar with the process, it's a straightforward tool for basic bike maintenance tasks like chain replacement or repair.
Bike stand
While not strictly a tool, a bike stand can make maintenance tasks much easier by holding your bike off the ground and allowing you to work on it more comfortably.
Spoke wrench/key
A spoke wrench is a specialized tool used for adjusting the tension of the spokes on a bicycle wheel. Using a spoke wrench allows you to maintain proper tension and alignment of the spokes, which is crucial for keeping your bicycle wheel true and preventing issues such as wobbling or spoke breakage. Regularly checking and adjusting the tension of the spokes can help prolong the life of your wheels and ensure a smooth riding experience.
Torque wrench
Handy for tightening bolts to the manufacturer's specifications, especially on carbon components where over-tightening can cause damage. Using a torque wrench for bike maintenance helps ensure that bolts and nuts are tightened to the correct specifications, reducing the risk of damage or failure and prolonging the life of your bike components. It's a valuable tool to have in your bike repair arsenal, especially for those who are meticulous about maintaining their bikes.
Pedal wrench
A pedal wrench is a specialized tool designed specifically for installing and removing pedals on a bicycle. Pedals are typically attached to the crank arms using a threaded spindle, and a pedal wrench provides the leverage and grip necessary to loosen or tighten these pedals securely.
