Cycle to Work Frequently Asked Questions answered by Eurocycles Ireland Bike Shop

At Eurocycles, we have years of experience helping employees get their bikes through the Cycle to Work Scheme. We have seen many scenarios and answered the many questions accompanying bicycle's order through the scheme. Today, we are compiling these questions through the cycle to work FAQs below. If you want to learn the basics of the bike-to-work scheme, check our cycle-to-work scheme guide.

What is the Cycle to Work Scheme?

The Cycle to Work initiative allows you to sacrifice part of your salary in return for a bicycle and cycling equipment which should be used primarily for work-related journeys. Through the scheme, you can save up to 52% of the retail cost of a pedal bike. The savings are based on bikes and accessories of up to €1250 or €1500 for an e-bike and €3000 for cargo and ecargo bikes. The repayments are made through a salary sacrifice agreed with your employer that can not be longer than 12 months.

What is a salary sacrifice agreement?

The Cycle to Work salary sacrifice is an agreement between the employee and employer where the employee agrees to forego part of their salary to cover the cost of a bike and safety equipment. The employee will not be liable to pay Income Tax, PRSI, or USC on the salary foregone.
The salary sacrifice period for the Cycle to Work Scheme can range between 1 to 12 months but cannot exceed a year.

What are the limits of the Cycle to Work Scheme?

The scheme is limited to one bike package. The bike package is for pedal bicycles for up to €1250, up to €1500 for an electric bike and up to €3000 for cargo and electric cargo bikes, and eligible accessories. Individuals can only avail of the scheme every four years.

What can I purchase through the scheme?

Through Cycle to Work, you can purchase bicycles, electric bikes, helmets, cycling clothing, and any bike equipment (like mudguards, lights, and locks). However, the scheme does not cover motorbikes, scooters, mopeds or second-hand bikes.

How much can I save?

You can save up to 52% of the retail cost of the bike and equipment you have chosen. The amount you are saving depends on your personal situation. Feel free to try our saving calculator.

Can I use the Cycle to Work Scheme if I work from home?

Yes, if you use the bicycle for work-related journeys like trips to the post office or to collect supplies.

How many times can you use the Cycle to Work Scheme?

Employees can avail of the scheme once every four years. The four-year span between tax breaks is counted by tax year.

Can you get electric bikes on Cycle to Work Scheme?

Yes, e-bikes are eligible under the scheme up to the value of €1500 or up to €3000 for e-cargo bikes.

Can I purchase a bike from one retailer and equipment from another?

Revenue stipulates that the cycle-to-work purchase must be processed in one transaction only.

Can I add money to the Cycle to Work Scheme?

The scheme must be processed in one transaction for the value of up to €1250 for any pedal bike, €1500 for e-bikes and €3000 for cargo and ecargo bicycles and accessories. However, this does not mean you can't purchase a bike over these amounts. If the bike you wish to purchase is over these thresholds, you can arrange your salary sacrifice to the limit of €1250, €1500 or €3000 (depending on the bike you are getting) and pay the difference directly to us.

For example, if you want to purchase the Scott Sub Active eRide 10 Unisex electric bike (cost €2999) via the scheme, you will have to pay €1499, and the remainder of €1500 will be done through the scheme. To order, just select cycle to work payment at checkout, and we'll send you all you need to get your bike.

How long does the Cycle to Work scheme take?

Usually, it takes between 3 to 15 working days from application to redemption. The time it takes varies depending on your employer's processing times. Once we receive payment, we endeavour to have your bike and accessories ready within 2 to 5 working days. We will keep you updated on your order's progress at every step.

Can I buy two bikes on the Cycle to Work Scheme?

The short answer is yes. If you are using both bikes for commuting or work-related journeys, you can order them via the scheme under one transaction.

What are the benefits of the Cycle to Work Scheme?

On top of the savings made through the cycle-to-work scheme, employees and employers will find many benefits to cycling to work.
As an employee, you will reduce your carbon footprint, cut your commuting costs (and, in some high-traffic situations, times) and improve your overall health and morale.
As an employer, you will reduce parking and congestion problems around the workplace, build a healthier and happier work environment, and contribute to your company's ecological sustainability.
